What is a Simile?

What is a Simile

It uses like or as to compare two objects.

Similes are fun to read and can be lyrical. They can help spark your reader’s imagination. You’ll see them in everything from poetry to company slogans.

Examples

  • He’s as cold as ice.
  • This steak is as tough as jerky.
  • Her face turned as white as alabaster.
  • Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.

Similes vs. Metaphors

A metaphor figuratively says one thing is something else.

The ice is rock hard.

A simile compares, using like or as.

The ice is as clear as glass.
